As Garrett relates stories from his own life, alongside personal accounts from other men he interviewed, More Like the Father offers lived-in wisdom about good dads being responsible, consistent, loving, gracious and other similar characteristics. Flowing through these pointers is how God (and his Son Jesus) first displayed them to humanity.

Everyday moments are lessons for life

The other day we were out driving and the car next to us started drifting into our lane. My quick toot of the horn to alert the driver was met with one loud, long blast that lasted a couple of hundred metres. Just in case we didn’t get the message, the front passenger gestured a two-handed ‘bird’ all the way to the next set of traffic lights.

We seem to have lost the ability to take responsibility for our actions – to smile, wave and say ‘oops sorry, my bad!’

For Mums this Father’s Day

Here’s a Father’s Day idea that will speak to one of your man’s greatest desires, and it won’t cost a cent.

I recently read a book called Love and Respect which explores one of the differences between women and men. Author Dr Eggerichs says that a woman’s primary desire is to be loved, and a man’s primary desire is to be respected. That’s not to say that men don’t need to be loved (or that women don’t need to be respected), it speaks to the most fundamental of needs in a hierarchy of desires.

3 things to not say to your children

A parent’s words hold a lot of weight with their children – “You’re an idiot” coming from a child in the playground might be easily brushed aside, whereas the same words from a parent can have a devastating effect on a child.

I think we’d all agree that those kinds of words should never be used with our children. However, there are some less obvious things that we say, that on the surface might appear harmless, but can have a damaging long-term effect.
